We recently spent some time speaking to Michelle Johns, Director of Marketing and Volunteers for Katy Christian Ministries. Her passion for the clients comes through so clearly when she is describing the many ways that KCM helps people in need. You can tell that she truly loves what she does. We were struck by the enormous commitment that KCM has to its clients and the lengths they are willing to go to when it comes to serving the community. I know that it can be easy to look past people when we don’t know how to help. KCM finds ways. In situations where there is abuse or sexual assault, they will meet with the victims at the hospital and continue to be with them throughout the legal process. They provide a 24 hour hotline for crisis situations. KCM’s goal is to give its clients the tools and resources needed to get their lives back on track and then assist them with finding solutions to their individual crisis situations.
KCM was started by two churches in Katy back in the early 1980’s. Eventually land was donated and they now have a building in Katy that houses administration, a food pantry, social services, and domestic and sexual abuse centers. This is possible because of the tremendous support from the area churches, businesses, and community involvement.
Recognizing the growing need in our area, KCM was able to acquire the support from area churches; River Bend Baptist, Simonton Community, Word Serve, First United Methodist, and Parkway Fellowship. The Fulshear location has a social service program, donation center and food pantry that serves the 77441, 77476, 77485,77464, and 77406 zip codes.
If you are wondering how you can help…..they are accepting donations of canned goods, clothing, gently used furniture, personal care items, and house wares. Of course cash donations are greatly appreciated as well. You can participate in the upcoming golf tournament on October 18 at Willow Fork Country Club or plan to attend the Gala on April 9, 2011 at Texas Safari. On a grander scale, KCM hopes to one day have its own building here in Fulshear that is large enough to house an onsite store. As a community, our support is critical. Let’s don’t look past our neighbors in need.
